Frequently Asked Questions
-
I currently offer individual therapy to adults.
-
I think it's very important that my approach be customized for each client I work with. Generally, I view myself as a co-traveler on life's journey. I incorporate aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (also known as IFS or Parts Work), Mindfulness, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and other somatic or body-based approaches. In our initial sessions, we will identify your goals and those will serve as our North Star as we move forward, informing the approaches we take.
-
I work with adults (18+) to address concerns such as anxiety, trauma, life transitions, stress management, and depression. I work with clients who have been in therapy before as well as those brand new to the process.
-
Our initial session together has one goal: to see if it feels like a good fit to work together.
It will usually follow a pretty predictable format: we'll start with a conversation about the forms and policies your filled out - to answer any questions and fill in any gaps. From there, I'll ask some questions about you, your life, and what is bringing you in. I'll also share with you a little information about my background, approach, and what to expect moving forward. You're also welcome to ask questions. At the end of the session, you'll be given the option to schedule another session, if it feels like a good fit to you.
-
After the initial session, things get more fluid. Sessions are generally 53 minutes long and can be focused on specific goals you've established for therapy or can be more focused on processing recent life events. It's your time to use in the way that best suits you!
-
I offer both. If you are in the Kalamazoo area, I offer in-person sessions at my office at 1611 W. Centre Street, Suite 203, Portage, MI. Otherwise, I offer virtual sessions to clients both in Kalamazoo and across Michigan via a HIPAA compliant platform.
-
I usually suggest we start with weekly 53-minute sessions, so you can get comfortable with the therapeutic process, build some momentum, and start moving toward your goals. Based on individual needs, we can also discuss scheduling less frequently or for a shorter length of time.
-
I am available for daytime and limited evening appointments Monday through Thursday. Generally, new clients are able to schedule within 2-4 weeks. However, at this time, I do have a waitlist for new clients.
-
Yes, I am required by law to keep what we talk about confidential. There are a few exceptions in which I am required to break that confidentiality, specifically, if there is a risk of imminent harm to yourself or someone else, if there is concern about abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or if I receive a court order signed by a judge.
-
If you are experiencing a life threatening emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. If you are experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis and would like to speak to a trained crisis counselor, please call 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or 269-381-4357 for the Gryphon Place Helpline.
I am not "on-call" and should not be your first point of contact in a crisis or emergency. Rather, you should seek support from an immediately available source first, and then contact me once you are safe to discuss future scheduling as needed.
The Therapy Process
-
I am currently in network with the following insurance providers:
Aetna
Anthem
Blue Care Network
Blue Cross Blue Shield
Blue Cross Complete Medicaid
McLaren
Meridian
MESSA
Optum
Priority Health
United Medical Resources (UMR)
United Behavioral Health (UBH)
If I am out-of-network for your insurance provider, I am happy to provide a super bill so you can request reimbursement for your out-of-pocket costs.
-
I am happy to work with you whether or not you have insurance, whether or not you are happy with the insurance you have. I offer cash pay arrangements, with my base rate for a 53 minute session of $175. I am also happy to work with you to find a cost or pay schedule that works with your current financial situation and budget.
-
If you are unable to attend a scheduled session for any reason, I require 24 hour notice. If you cancel within that 24 hour period, or do not show up for a scheduled session without prior notice, a $100 late cancelation fee will be charged to your payment method on file. If you are able to reschedule a cancelled session within the same week, the cancelation fee may be waived, at my discretion.
-
This depends on your specific plan. Before meeting, please contact your insurance provider to verify your specific benefits. You should ask specifically about your deductible and co-pay/co-insurance, as these are the most common out-of-pocket expenses you might face.
-
I accept credit and debit card payments (including HSA cards), cash, and secure online payments through Sessions Health. Payment is due at the time of service.
